Happy Earth remembers the Punch Buggy guy

Since Kicsticks are 100% natural, biodegradable, and come from the earth I found it fitting to do a bit of research. Did “sweet root”, aka  Kicsticks, play a role in what is known and celebrated today as Earth Day?

So I started to dig, but since I’m a bit A.D.D. I got completely sidetracked and became somewhat obsessed with where the name came from. It’s a bit of a no-brainer Earth Day… We all stop for a moment and take steps to help save the poor choking planet that we live on.

As a guy who spent the majority of his career in advertising, I was floored to learn that it was a copywriter who was assigned the task. Yep, an ad guy named Julian Koenig came up with Earth Day.  Then I thought, hmmm, that name seems familiar… Julian Koenig wrote the tagline for the VW Bug - “think small” which was voted the most successful ad of the 20th century by Ad Age Magazine. Crazy!

That is pretty impressive, but you imagine if his two big moments in the advertising business had opposite effects on the world? The Earth would have been healthy and healed. Yay! He most likely would have won the Nobel Prize instead of being inducted to the advertising hall of fame. Bravo!

But… If the world did not have an astounding 23 million VW’s in it, (thanks  Julian!) there wouldn’t have been the Punch Buggy Game. Now that’s super sad.  We all remember punching a passenger in the car in the arm as hard as you could when you saw a VW and yelling, PUNCH BUGGY!

So I guess it all worked out the way it was supposed to. Kic the Nic & Chew a Stick.
